Best Basset Hound Dog And Puppy Names

One of the more popular breeds of dogs is the basset hound. A basset hound is a calm friendly dog that is great for homes and small families. The basset hound is difficult to train, but is very loyal. If a basset hound is bought as a puppy, one of the most important steps to the dog's development is the name. Dog names are more important than a lot of people realize, and some thought should be given before dog names are handed out.

Puppy names have multiple uses and should be handled as such. Most people just give puppy names they think sound good or are silly. However, dogs identify with their names much like humans. Often for training purposes, dog experts suggest that an owner pick a name that is two syllables or longer. This way, a dog will identify with the full name, but an owner can shorten it to a nickname or use the full name as a more authoritative title. Additionally, names can influence other people's perception of a dog. For example, a dog named Daisy is more likely to be well received as opposed to a dog named Killer.

There are a lot of different schools of thought in regards to dog names. Some like giving their dog a human name. Others would rather pick a descriptive name or something silly or cute. Because of their low hanging droopy skin, many basset hound owners like to call their dog Droopy, after the cartoon character. Other famous basset hound dog names are Fred Bassett from the comic strip, Flash from “Dukes of Hazzard,” and Dog from “Columbo.”

Male basset hound names are pretty easy to come by. In addition to the standby names like Fred, Fido, or Buster, there are plenty of names to give a male basset hound. Many people enjoy naming their puppy after a famous figure, be it a celebrity, a politician, or athlete. Max is a popular male dog name because there are many different variations of the name to use with the dog in different situations.

The tendency with female basset hound names skews more to the cute and descriptive words rather than just a plain name. Daisy, Lady, Princess, and lucky are some very popular female names. Similar to Max for male dogs, Sam is a very popular name for females. These names are unisex, but Max sounds more masculine and Sam more feminine.

Naming his or her dog is one of the most important things a basset hound owner will do. Both the dog and the owner must live with the name for the rest of the puppy's life. More versatile names that can be shortened, lengthened, or changed based on different situations are considered the best, especially for training a basset hound. However, naming one's dog is a very personal and significant experience for both puppy and owner, and the owner should choose the name that feels right for them, not based on what others say.
