Basset Hound: Hush Puppies Logo And Mascot

If someone's reclining and propping their feet up after a long day's work, chances are they have slipped on their Hush Puppies first. For almost 50 years, Hush Puppies, the Michigan based casual shoe company, has defined the market for high quality relaxed fit footwear. Hush Puppies are not only recognizable by their products' appearance, but also for their unforgettable basset hound logo, a fixture for the company since the very beginning. Armed with technologically advanced shoe designs, a reputation in comfort and relaxation, and a highly recognizable mascot, the company has set the standard for leisure footwear around the world.

The company began in Rockford, Mich., in 1958 when shoemakers at Wolverine wanted to design a leisure shoe for post-war suburbia. The company had been developing new methods of pig skin tanning for the military when executives recognized the potential for a pig skin casual shoe. The relaxed style shoe caught on and Hush Puppies spread all over the country and eventually the world. Today, when people hear “hush puppies,” they instantly think of slipping their feet into comfortable leather shoes as opposed to fried cornmeal dumplings.

Without a doubt, an integral factor in the success of the company has been the brand name and its basset hound logo, the cute and cuddly image that has come to represent casual footwear. An early sales executive came up with the name and mascot when visiting clients in the Southeast. Some Southerners quiet their hounds by throwing them fried cornmeal dumplings otherwise known as hush puppies. Aching feet were commonly referred to as barking dogs, so the sales executive recognized immediately that the company's footwear could quiet the world's barking dogs. From then on, the basset hound mascot appeared in countless print ads and garnered widespread visual recognition and even a devoted dog loving fan base.

The reason why a basset hound was chosen as the canine face of the company is simply the result of early test marketing. With an exciting new product and brand name in the works, ad executives tested  logos with around ten different looks. The droopy and lovable look of the basset hound continually caught consumers' eyes and was selected as the face of the company's unprecedented 1958 national ad campaign. The basset hound logo still stands as one of the most successful advertising campaigns ever with Hush Puppies receiving over 90% consumer recognition in countries all around the world.

Over time, Hush Puppies have supported and even enhanced their popularity by continuing to advance technologies and designs that assist relaxation. People want to slip on comfortable shoes and kick their feet up, and Hush Puppies helps them do that. Whether it's the cozy fit of the shoes, the decades long reputation, or the cuddly basset hound logo, Hush Puppies has come to define leisurely living.
